The elastic strikingly marked grey from the Holsteiner damline 6879 knew how to convince not only the sport riders and breeders among the spectators, but also the licensing commission at his licensing in 2023 at the Olympic equestrian facility in Munich. Thanks to his consistently excellent sequence of movement over the fence and his outstanding manner with great composure, overview and willingness to perform, he was not only licensed, but also awarded a premium.

His father, winnings-millionaire Comme il faut NRW, was retired from sport at the 2021 European Championships. Previously, the son of Cornet Obolensky and  Ratina Z and thus the offspring of two Olympic horses had been  one of the top horses of international sport for years, had won World Cup jumping, Grand Prix, Nations Cups and last but not least European Championship silver in Rotterdam in 2019 with Marcus Ehning and had long since made a name for himself as a sire. Of his descendants registered in Germany alone, far more than 100 are successful in the top class level and more than 50 of his sons have been licensed and recognized so far. With Carano, the thoroughbred Sir Shostakovich xx, who stands for sportiness and hardness, and the not only in Holstein legendary Selle Francais stallion Cor de la Bryère, other important sires line up on the sire side of the pedigree.

What makes Chameleon very special among the sons of Come il faut is not only the conclusive combination of sires, but also his important dam line, the Holsteiner dam line 6879, which is described by the Holsteiner Verband itself as “one of the strongest in Holsteiner breeding”.  Chameleon’s dam already brought successful offspring in sports up to class 1.40m and from the grand dam came sport horses successful up to 1.40m as well as horses successful in international eventing competitions. The third dam, Faience by Cor de la Bryère, not only counts horses placed up to 1.60 m level to her offspring, she also became an important stallion dam: Four of her sons were licensed, including Chellano Z, who excelled in international jumping under Jos Lansink (BEL).

Chameleon’s fourth dam, the mare Soleil by Capitol I, is also in a class of her own. The Holsteiner, who was bred from a daughter of Maestoso xx, is, among other things, the mother of the Corrado full brothers, also sons of Cor de la Bryère. Corrado I was both athletically and in breeding a figurehead of Holsteiner breeding.  Already in his stallion performance test he made a name for himself with the ideal mark of 10.0 for free jumping and jumping ability. Under Franke Sloothaak he won Grand Prix, Nations Cups and World Cup jumping, including the NRW Prize at the CHIO in Aachen in 1994.  He also bequeathed his enormous jumping ability to his children.  Corradina, for  example, dominated international show jumping with Carsten-Otto Nagel for years. Team gold at the World Equestrian Games 2010 in Kentucky and the European Championships in Madrid 2011 as well as silver in the individual ranking of the European Championships in Windsor 2009 are on her track record.  The stallion Clinton by Corrado I, ridden by Dirk Demeersman (BEL), was also highly successful.  Clinton was fourth at the Olympic Games in Athens 2004 and a sought-after stallion in his Belgian homeland. Among other things, he made a name for himself as the father of Cornet Obolensky. Without Corrado I, without the Holsteiner dam line 6879, this sought-after sire would not have existed. The list of highly decorated Corrado descendants is long. Far more than 1. 000 were registered as competition horses in Germany, almost 300 were successful at advanced level, their lifetime winnings are more than four million euros.

So much for a look back at the recent history of the dam line. However, he has been cared for for a very long time and already in the 1950s his horses made headlines.  Baden was a 1952 Olympic participant under Hermann Evers in Helsinki and 1954 with Francisco Goyoaga (ESP) World  Championship bronze medalist at the European Championships in  Madrid. Baden’s full sister Original Holsatia, with Fritz Thiedemann in the saddle one of the most popular jumping horses of his time and Aachen winner in 1951, also belonged to this dam line.  Many years later it was horses like Lausbub, winner of the German Derby under Achaz von Buchwaldt in 1996, Landlord, Lausbub’s full brother, with whom Ludger Beerbaum won Grand Prix, and Aquino under Franke Sloothaak, who was later sold to Russia, who stood for the quality of the dam line.

Among the current chapters of “Holstein 6879” is the stallion Connor from the full sister of Corrado I. His children, such as Conner JEI, who scores  points with Martin Fuchs (SUI) in jumping in the Global Champions Tour, among others such as Charmie successful with

Antomio Alfanso (ITA) up to CSI5* speak for themselves. Licensed sons such as the stallion Chubakko, born in 2013, placed at the European Championships of Young Jumping Horses in Lanaken in 2019 and now successful up to Nations Cup level under Noora Pentti (FIN) and Christian Kukuk, are also among his descendants.

Chameleon – the stable name is “Dots” – which owes its name to the fact that the grey marked with white dots was originally registered as a “chestnut”, is the latest chapter in a history that has been traced over decades and combines greats of sport and breeding.  He is well on his way to becoming history himself.  The course has been set, because the trainer of the likeable stallion is the World Championship and Olympic participant in eventing Christopher Burton,  who lives in England and has been highly successful in international show jumping as well. Best conditions.
